These will be very productive and useful 3 hours of your life. Check the following topics that well go through during the workshop:
Who are you?
Im of the opinion that if someone can get a better understanding of who they are on stage, that they are then able to improvise in a way that is unique to them. We will find out more about YOU and how to use any perceived strengths and weaknesses.
Playing the room
All audiences are different. Some are livelier than others and other days it feels like performing in a cemetery. Being in the moment and awareness of the room is what makes great improvisation. I will discuss the idea of “range” in this section and how to perform in a way that is appropriate for the room and situation you are in.
Blending prepared material with improvised material
Ideally, you will be able to disguise prepared material so that the audience cannot tell the difference between written and improvised.
Dealing with interruptions/hecklers
The biggest fear of a lot of performers is being heckled. There are many different types of heckles and responses to them.
Tricks of the trade
We will discuss how to pick the right person to speak to in an audience. How to create a running joke with that person or indeed when to bail out and pretend it never happened. How to use reincorporation or what standup comics call “callbacks”.
Stage craft
How to stand, how to walk, how to use your voice all in a way that again, suits who you are on stage.
What if I forget? What if I fail?
There are ways of remembering and covering up when youve forgotten something. There are ways of dealing with failing too by using saver lines – you can improvise these too!
P.S. You can bring 3 minutes of material that you want to talk about.
Instructor: Matt Price, a comedian with 15 years of performing all over the world from Turkey to Cambodia. He is a big friendly guy from Cornwall in the UK. He likes to tell stories, he tells jokes and interacts with a crowd in a way that makes everyone in the room feel good. Every audience is different so every performance is different too. He can help you find out more about yourself and start to become more comfortable with improvising on stage. Matt also hosts the “Conversations with Criminals” podcast in which he interviews retired criminals and ask them about their lives. It was described in Crime monthly magazine as a “podcast sensation”. Matts stories are from the wilder side of life but surprisingly easy to relate to.
